While you may want to buy a brand-new hook lift truck, it may be in your best interest to buy a used one instead. To make sure that you are buying something that is durable and that you can have for years, there are a few tips that you should follow. 

Tip 1: Check for Rust

When you have a lot of components on your hook lift truck, you need to make sure everything is in great condition. One of the biggest things that you should check for is rust. Rust can corrode away metal and cause it to weaken, which means that you may end up with a busted hook lift truck. If you notice small pieces of rust, take the truck into a mechanic and see how much it would cost to fix it because it's better to fix it now before it gets any worse. 

Tip 2: Look at the Electrical System

When you have a hook lift truck, everything that powers the hoist system is electrical. Make sure that every part of the electrical system is working. Does the system have any glitches? Does it lift things properly? Does it slow down at a certain point? Electrical systems can be very expensive to replace so you will definitely want to make sure it is in good condition. 

Tip 3: Check for Leaks

Any sort of automobile has tons of fluids in it to keep it functioning properly. Before you buy a hook lift truck, check all of the fluids including the oil, transmission fluid, and coolant to make sure there aren't any leaks. Also, check underneath the hook lift to make sure there aren't any standing puddles of fluids either. 

Tip 4: Check the Helper Springs

Many hook lift trucks have what are called helper springs which work to help raise and lower the hook when you're loading and unloading things onto it. Sometimes, these springs can wear down and start to malfunction. Make sure that you check these springs for any signs of erosion or damage.
