If you have a motorcycle, you want to be able to get it out on the road as often as possible. That means that you should be able to do some basic maintenance on it yourself. That way you won't have to take it in to get it worked on every time some little thing goes wrong. So, what are some things that you can do?
You want to make sure that you keep track of your tires' well-being. There are a couple of ways that you can do this. One is that you need to make sure that you check the tire pressure regularly. In this case, regularly means that you should check it about once a week. If your bike's tires don't have enough air in them or have too much, you are going to have a hard time with braking and steering. You can check less frequently when you have a car because there are other tires to take up the slack if one of your tires doesn't have enough air in it, but on your motorcycle, you just don't have that luxury. While you are checking the tire pressure, you should also check to see how much tread you have on your tire as well.
You should change your oil regularly, especially since many motorcycles use the motor oil as transmission fluid as well. If you are going to change your oil, make sure that you get motorcycle specific oil. It doesn't matter if you have the right weight, you need to have one that will handle the special needs of a motorcycle. You will also need to make sure that you have an oil filter so you can change out the filter. Usually, to check your oil level, you will need to set your bike so that it is nice and vertical and then look at the little window on the side. If the level is within the lines, then you are OK. Otherwise, you will need a wrench so that you can open up the oil container, drain it, close it, and then refill it. After you do that, just plug in your new oil filter, and you should be ready to go.
